What Is CACHEMAN ?

Like the main two PC Browsers, the PMI browser keeps a cache (by default,
on your internal disk) of pages visited. As long as you have set the setup
to retain the cache on exit, everything you downloaded remains on your
internal disk even after disconnecting.

The problem is accesing them from PMI browser as they have meaningless names
and the 'wrong' extension.

CACHEMAN is a simple OPL program for managing this cache. It's actions are

1 Help you give meaningful names to the files in the cache.
2 Copy the files to the \WWW directory. This is the default directory for "Open File" in PMI browser.

This saves you the trouble of reading before saving during an online session.
It makes your PMI browser more of an offline reader. This SAVES YOU MONEY.
Using this simple utility has drastically speeded up my psion online sessions -
all I have to do is work my way down my bookmarks list, downloading each page but
not readin it disconnect and then sit back in an armchair run CACHEMAN and read
everything.

INSTALLATION

copy cacheman.opa to an \APP directory
copy cacheman.def to M:\OPD
install by pressing Psion-I at the system screen

HOW TO USE CACHEMAN

1 Get PMI Browser set up correctly:

i) "Empty Cache and History On Exit" NO
ii) Have a large cache - 200k or more

2 Have a browse (Put something in your cache). Disconnect !!!!

3 Start CACHEMAN

4 From the displayed header part of the file determine a suitable name and
type in up to 8 letters . Press <ENTER>. If all is OK you'll be moved on to
the next file. If not you'll get an error message and be asked for another
name. Occasionaly the display shows "Dump terminated". There was a problem
displaying any more of the file - I tend to just name these files as
temp1 temp2 temp3 ... Then see what they're about later.

5 If CACHEMAN has found a graphic file, it will be obvious from the
displayed header (The first few letters are GIF). Skip copying this by
pressing <ENTER>.

6 If you don't want to make a copy of a file press <ENTER> to skip.

7 If you want to exit press <ESC>

8 If you have different directories for your cache or want to copy to a
different directory:
Use data to edit the file m:\opd\cacheman.def. There should only be one
record, the first field is the cache directory and the second field is the
destination directory. Make sure you include the teminating backslash (\).

HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM CACHEMAN

1 Have as large a cache as possible
2 Only download text (which is all you can realistically do on a psion anyway)
3 Put all the pages you regularly visit in your bookmark list. Then when you
go online you work your way down the list - only waiting for the page to
download, not reading. Go offline and run cacheman.

LIMITATIONS

This is really a beta version of the program. It works nicely for me but I
am sure others will find limitations:
Graphic files aren't linked in the copied files.
Slightly 'flakey' interface.

If there is sufficient interest I will tidy up the interface and handling of
defaults.
